The good eating habits of some Australians

Good eating habits are a cornerstone of the modern Western diet.

A key feature of the Australian diet is a highly structured and disciplined eating schedule, which is defined as having “three or more meals in a day” or “a regular pattern of eating”.

But there are many Australians who have found that their eating habits have evolved into something more holistic.

The key to good eating, says Dr Jules Lehrman, is the use of vegetables and fruits, which are high in fibre, and are minimised when possible.

These include legumes, beans, lentils, tofu and lentils with a little vegetable oil.

This “meat and potatoes” approach is particularly popular among older people, as they are more likely to be overweight or obese, and have a lower intake of the other essential nutrients of fibre, protein and fat.

Dr Lehrmans new book, The Habits of Eating, is aimed at providing a comprehensive look at the health of Australians’ eating habits.

“What we’re seeing in Australia, in terms of diet and obesity, is a very significant shift from a vegetarian to a vegan diet,” he says.

Dr Richard Aylward, a professor of nutrition and food studies at the University of Melbourne, says that people who are overweight or obesity are more prone to a number of chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

“There is a lot of evidence that overweight people have a much higher risk of developing obesity-related diseases,” he told Al Jazeera.

“The best predictor of death from heart disease and stroke is obesity.

So a very high body mass index, overweight people tend to be more prone than people of normal weight to developing obesity and diabetes.”

In the US, Dr LeHRmans work has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, and is now also being looked at by the US Food and Drug Administration.

“It’s important that we understand what is causing people to be in such an unhealthy state,” Dr LeHarns says.

“We can do a lot with these dietary patterns, and what is the optimal amount of food we are getting, and how do we minimise the risk of those diseases.”

The Habit of Eating has been produced by a team of leading nutrition experts.

“I am trying to help Australians understand what they are eating for health, what they have in their diet and how they can achieve their healthy weight,” Dr Aylwards said.
