How to be an honest player
I’m here to tell you guys that you need to be honest with yourself.
When you’re a young guy, the first thing you want to do is go out and play, and you want that confidence, and I know it’s a hard thing to get when you’re not really ready for it.
So you need that, and that’s what I’ve tried to teach my players through the years.
When I first came in here, I was a 19-year-old rookie.
I was the youngest guy in the room, so I was always like, “Yeah, I’m gonna be a freshman this year, and then I’m going to be a sophomore and then a junior.”
And then, I guess, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do.
But I guess I’m just here to give you guys a couple of pointers.
First of all, I just want you to keep playing hard, and if you keep playing, you’ll be fine.
Second of all is that if you don’t do it the right way, you’re going to get punished.
I don’t want you guys getting punished because you’re just not doing your job, you know?
That’s just not going to happen.
I think it’s just a matter of doing it the way I want to, because I’ve been through it, and there are times when I get mad at guys for not playing hard enough, but there’s nothing wrong with that.
I’m not going, “Oh, I should’ve played better,” but I’ve seen it happen.
So I’m saying, just play hard, play your position, play with passion.
If you can do that, you can be fine, because there are some good players in the league.
And I’ve got to say, you’ve got a lot of talent in the NFL, and it’s not just a talent thing.
I’ve worked with some of the best players in this league, and some of them are very good players.
And when I was in high school, they were like, I can’t believe you are playing in the Pro Bowl.
And then when I got to college, they’re like, you were playing so well.
You were winning, so why are you playing at a young age?
And I got mad at them, but they were trying to prove to me that I was going to have it and be good, and they’re telling me that’s a waste of time, and a waste.
So that’s just how I feel about it.
But you know, when I’m around guys, I try to get in a good conversation with them.
I want them to hear me, and let me know that it’s OK to have a little bit of pride in yourself, that you’re playing the game hard and you’re doing what you’re supposed to do, and when they don’t understand that, it can get to them.
So, that’s something I’m teaching all of my young guys, and we have some guys that really, really understand that.
They have some really great leadership skills, so they know what they’re supposed do.
They know what the right thing to do in the moment is.
And they know how to deal with adversity.
So it’s about doing that, because you know how good you can get if you’re honest with yourselves.
You know, you get punished a lot, but you know what?
When you’ve been around it, you never really understand why you get the punishment.
So if you play hard enough and when you know that’s the right decision, then you’ll get punished the right amount of time.
So all of that is just kind of, it’s an evolution that’s been happening for a while.
I feel like as long as you keep doing what’s right and playing hard and showing up and doing the right things, and doing it right, you should be fine and everything should go fine, and the league will take care of everything.
But if you get into that type of mentality, then I think you’re gonna get punished like a lot.
And the league takes care of that.
So as long like you do what you do, you don- I think that’s why you’re able to play in the game the way you do.
And if you go too far, you go through that and you get penalized.
So we’re all learning.
And that’s part of it, is we’re getting better, and sometimes we get caught up in some of these crazy things that we see, and maybe you can see it.
We’ll get caught in those situations.
But we just have to keep going, keep playing like we’ve been playing, and do the right stuff.
But that’s all we can do, right?
That is the reality.
So keep going.
So do your best.
Do what you gotta do, but don’t be too mad at yourself.
I mean, that’ll get you a lot more points than I can count
