Habitable zone of the San Diego Chargers
The San Diego Padres have officially confirmed that they are looking to acquire a starting pitcher in the 2018 Major League Baseball free agency period.
They have a strong farm system and are expected to use it in the same way the San Francisco Giants have done for years, signing players to play on their farm teams and signing them to long-term deals in the major leagues.
San Diego has the right to negotiate a contract with one of the top pitching prospects in the country, but it will need to make the most of the opportunity.
The Padres are currently playing with only one left-handed pitcher in their system, and their bullpen is starting to look a little thin.
Injuries and a glut of relievers will certainly play a part in the Padres’ rotation.
However, the team could also use another pitcher in order to fill a need.
In San Diego, the best pitcher could be left-hander Travis Wood, who the Padres selected in the seventh round of the 2015 MLB draft with the No. 24 overall pick.
The 21-year-old right-hander is ranked as the top prospect in the draft and will have the opportunity to showcase his skills in the San Jose Bay Area.
The Padres have also recently added left-handers, but they have only signed right-handed starters for that reason.
The best option for the Padres is to move to right-hand pitching, but that means they would have to go out and acquire another right-hitter.
One of the most talented right-hoppers in the game, Matt Garza, is expected to sign with the Phillies and the Padres would have an incentive to keep him around in the short term if they have a right-sided starter.
The two best right-pitching prospects in this year’s draft are lefty Dylan Bundy and righty Jose Bautista.
Both are right-hands and could be valuable in the long term.
Bundy is a former first round pick, while Bautistas is a righty, which makes him a right fielder as well.
Bundy has the ability to play all three outfield positions, and he has the tools to become a top-of-the-rotation type of player.
The fact that the Padres have been able to sign both of those pitchers will be an asset.
The only way they would lose both would be if the team signs a lefty, so they could certainly find a trade partner for Bundy or Bautists signing.
The San Diego Indians are currently rebuilding their bullpen, and they also have a talented bullpen in the form of the 2018 draft pick, Tyler Duffey.
The 24-year old right-shoulder reliever has thrown at least five innings in each of his last two seasons and has pitched in the Majors in the past.
The Indians are expected not to be able to make a major trade in the coming years, but the team has some very good young prospects.
The team’s pitching depth is still very much up in the air, and there are still a few young arms available to them.
The team could use another reliever in order for them to get a more experienced bullpen, but Wood, Garza and Duffey would all be highly sought after by major league teams.
The best bet for the Indians would be to bring in an established starter, like Wood, Duffey or Bannister, and then add another righty.
The left-sided reliever could be a trade chip, and if they sign another left-hoser, it could open up the team up to more trades.
The other option would be for the team to go after a closer and a starting pitching prospect, which could also open up a lot of possibilities for the franchise.
